Hair Care Tips for Your Child's Hair!

Posted by Matthew S on Tue, Mar 14, 2017 @ 15:03 PM

Haircaretips.jpgSometimes it can be pretty easy to help teach kids the importance of a healthy lifestyle through brushing their teeth, washing their hands, and how to take a proper bath or shower. But when it comes to proper care of hair, sometimes this is one of those subjects that can be easy to overlook! Here at Shear Madness Haircuts for Kids, a hair salon where every child matters, we understand how important healthy hair can be towards helping kids feel great about themselves each day. That's why we thought it might be a good idea to share some of our hair care tips on developing a routine that works for you and your child, and reinforces healthy hair habits from an early age on!

Different Kids, Different Hair! First off, every child is different and has a different type of hair (dry, oily, curly or straight). Age, activity level  and even weather conditions are also important considerations when trying to determine how often a child might need to wash and care for their hair! For example, some recommend that toddler hair should be washed around three times a week, while oily hair should be shampooed once a day or every other day. Some also recommend that hair should be rinsed out with water and properly conditioned after swimming or excessive sweating.  Meanwhile, be sure to monitor how your child responds to shampoo and conditioner, as well as the frequency it's being washed, and adjust as necessary. If you notice the hair or scalp responding poorly to the shampoo, conditioner (such as the hair becoming dull, oily or dry), you may want to try a different shampoo or not wash their hair as often.

Picking the Right Hair Care Products: Different kids and different hairstyles require different kids shampoo and conditioners too! How the shampoos and conditioners smell and react with their skin are all things you'll want to think about when making a healthy and helpful purchase in this area. For example, if a child's hair is dry, try to look for a good moisturizing shampoo. Also, if a child has a scalp condition (such as dandruff, psoriasis or dermatitis), checking with a dermatologist might be helpful. And don't forget, Shear Madness Haircuts for Kids carries a huge variety of shampoos and swimmer's shampoos (in a variety of fun and fruity scents) conditioners, pre-swim conditioners, lice prevention and defense and colored hair chalks and gels (for guys and gals) too! Read all about them on our Shear Madness Products page

Washing that Hair! When washing your child's hair, be sure to get the hair completely wet and use about a quarter-sized amount of shampoo (thicker hair types might require a little more shampoo, while thinner hair types migth require a little less). Gently massage the shampoo into the hair and scalp using just your fingertips. Be careful not to scratch, as this may irritate the scalp. When finished, make sure all the shampoo is washed out of the hair. Any left-over shampoo may irritate the hair or scalp.

But What About Kids Conditioner? Conditioners also depend on the type of hair your child has, and come in several varieties. Leave-in conditioners are not washed out of the child's hair, and are simply left in to help with such issues as detangling. However, a leave-in conditioner may give fine, thin hair a lot of extra weight - which could give a less than ideal appearance to the hair. There's also instant conditioners, which coat the hair and help with such factors as shine and softness. Unlike a leave-in conditioner, instant conditioners are rinsed out of the hair. Meanwhile, deep conditioners will stay in the hair for certain amount of time before being rinsed out. Depending on the condition of the hair, you'll want to look at the frequency of using a deep conditioner. Sometimes it might be with every hair washing - or simply just once a month.

Oh No! It's a Hair Emergency! Sometimes kids end up with stuff stuck in their hair like glue or gum. But don't worry! A lot of times these can be solved without needing to cut out the problem area. For example, glue can sometimes be removed with getting the area wet, using a little conditioner and then combing it out. Sometimes baby oil left in the hair for 15 or 20 minutes will help remove the glue. As for gum, peanut butter or vegetable oil can help with this. Just let it set for a few minutes, and then rinse! However, if a child takes their hair into their own hands and cuts it - you may need to see a professional stylist (like at Shear Madness Haircuts for Kids) to help fix the problem. But hats, pins and hairbows can help conceal the problem area too, at least until the hair grows back.

A Father & Son's First Trip to Shear Madness Haircuts for Kids!

Posted by Matthew S on Tue, Mar 14, 2017 @ 15:03 PM

fatherson.jpgAfter having recently written about what it is that Shear Madness Haircuts for Kids is about (which can be read right here), we thought it would be fun to follow it up with an actual account of a parents review of a first-time visit to one of our stores! Following is what a father and his son had to say about what it's like to visit a Shear Madness Haircuts for Kids!

Matt describes that after learning about Shear Madness Haircuts for Kids from a friend, he made an appointment for his son to visit on a Sunday afternoon. "The receptionist was very friendly, and really sounded interested in what was going on," Matt noted. "This was a great first impression, as sometimes I've called stores and gotten ahold of people who weren't overly enthused to talk to me. It made a difference."

Matt then discussed that on the day of their appointment, he tried to arrive with his son a few minutes early. "When we walked in, I could tell this was the kind of place I would have loved coming to as a kid. And I could tell my son was really liking it too. He was drawn to the diecast vehicles and action figures in a cool retail area in the front of the store, and spent a few minutes checking these out while we waited just a minute or two for our haircut. There were a lot of toys and games for boys, but there was also toys and stuffed animals for girls -and there was jewelry, hairbows and hair products too, which was great. I also really liked the look of the store, as it has a lot of bright colors and fun artwork hanging on the walls. And there was a birthday party going on in the back, with karaoke, which added to the fun atmosphere of the place."

"My son pretty much knew what to expect for his haircut, but this was the first time he was able to play a game while he was getting it cut. He also could have watched a movie too, but he couldn't resist one of the building games that was available on the game console that he also plays at home. Meanwhile, I was able to stand nearby and watch, and we both gave our input on what we were looking for regarding his hairstyle," Matt explained. "The stylist was very friendly, and talked to my son about how his day was. She also talked with me too, and seemed like she really enjoyed her job. I saw that there were a variety of vehicle type chairs for kids to sit in while they were getting a haircut, but as my son is older, he sat in a normal sized chair. I later learned that I could have gotten a haircut there as well if I had wanted, and that sometimes adults will come in and get a haircut with their child for the sake of convenience. There's also various haircutting packages, where a mother and son can get a haircut together for a special price, or a daddy and daughter can get one too. I'll definitely plan on coming back again the next time my son needs his haircut!"

When Matt's son was asked about his visit to Shear Madness, he smiled and said, "My Shear Madness trip was so fantastic, it felt wonderful to get manly-scented hair gel put into my hair. I enjoyed playing the games while getting my haircut. I also liked how vibrant everything was, and had fun looking at the toys. I would definitely recommend this place, because it's good!"

When it Comes to Franchising...Don't Buy the Ice Melt!

Posted by Jim Otto on Tue, Feb 14, 2017 @ 17:02 PM

dontbuyicemelt.jpgYou know, several weeks ago our local weatherman here in Kansas City started talking about a major ice storm. When the local news came on they would open up with the scary music and the big graphics that filled the screen, "ICE STORM 2017".  Of course, there were long lines at the grocery stores and bottled water supplies quickly dwindled. However, one report that really fascinated me was from a poor, exhausted individual at a local convenience store who had been to 7 stores, and still couldn't find any ice melt - everyone was sold out!

Well, you probably know where I am gong with this. The big storm never came. If the people who had gone out in a panic had done a little homework, they would've noticed that it was a one day event where the weathermen expected it to be back in the fifties in a couple of days. In other words, if you could survive for 24 hours, you were probably going to be just fine!

Unfortunately, franchising is a lot like this. We are constantly  amazed by some of our competitors who claim things like, "We are growing at 500 percent! We have 16 markets that are sold out! We are the best children's salon franchise in America!" One recent competitor of ours making such claims just bought the concept from a previous Franchisor competitor only two years ago! Wow! If we would have known that we could have learned everything about our business in a couple of years, then you can bet that we would've franchised it along time ago (because we ran the concept for 12 years before we franchised it). You see, what they are really good at is selling franchises - not running the concept that they are selling.

So let me give you some advice: do your homework! Ask how long a franchisor has been running the concept, ask if they are currently running the concept, ask how many franchise locations have closed and for goodness sake's call the franchisees and see if they are getting the training and support they need. The moral to the story here? A lot of franchisors sound just like our local weatherman, and a whole lot of people went out and spent money on ice melt when they really shouldn't have!

Shear Madness Franchising franchises Shear Madness Haircuts for Kids salons. We have worked with franchise stores in providing franchisee support (in order to encourage continual growth), and have sometimes seen the unexpected happen!  When it does, we help by identifying and helping with challenges that might arise for franchisees. Additionally, we work to present options that can help prevent these events as well. As many franchise owners may not have opened a business before, having someone who can advise them is a significant advantage of franchise ownership!

What is Shear Madness Haircuts for Kids?

Posted by Matthew S on Mon, Jan 16, 2017 @ 12:01 PM

what.jpgIt's true that Shear Madness Haircuts for Kids has experienced phenomenal growth over the last several years, and is opening up exciting new locations all the time. But we understand that there are still those folks out there who just don't know what our concept is about. So here is what Shear Madness Haircuts for Kids is, and how we make it our mission to truly be a place "Where Every Child matters!"

To start off with, Shear Madness Haircuts for Kids is a place where kid's haircuts are our specialty. One thing we're known for is the fun vehicles that kids can sit in when they get a haircut. And while these cool cars, trucks and airplanes are a great way to stimulate imaginative play, we also provide televisions and game consoles so that children can have fun experiences (and not just be staring off into space) while they are getting their fantastic new hair style. But we also understand that some of our customers may be older kids or adults too, so we of course have normal chairs along with televisions and game consoles to interact with (if they so choose) while getting a haircut.

SeptWed3.jpgShear Madness is also known for it's fun and memorable environment. From the moment a child and their parent walks into one of our stores, they know they've entered into a unique place where kids feel special. With happy kids music playing in the background, cheerful staff, brightly colored mirrors, cool lights, the afore-mentioned vehicle chairs, and stylish graphics on the walls, it's hard not to feel like you've entered into a totally new and wonderful kind of magical kids realm!

Plus, when you visit one of our locations, you'll definitely have a blast shopping (and playing) in our award-winning YOUniquey Boutiquey! We have tons of great kids retail gifts for birthdays, holidays, or just because. Everything from diecast toy cars, airplanes and trains, to stuffed animals, action figures, toys for imaginative play, dinosaurs, educational games and books, and so much  more. And don't forget to check out our amazing selection of jewelry and kids hair care products! Our fantastic bow wall is also a fun sight to behold, as we have a HUGE variety of hairbows in all shapes, sizes and colors! Wow!

Shear0331.jpgAnother great thing about Shear Madness Haircuts for Kids is the many different services we offer to kids and their parents. We love helping kids look and feel their best through great kids haircuts, but we also offer an amazing ear piercing experience where kids can get both ears pierced at the same time and get treated like a star! And if that wasn't exciting enough - at our La De Da Spa, we also offer fun manicures and pedicures for kids! It's just so cool to see all those smiling little girls in spa robes having the time of their life! First Haircuts are a special time as well, as we roll out the red carpet for this fun event in life with a special certificate, before and after picture and snippet of their hair.

Our Parties are also a fun aspect about Shear Madness Haircuts for Kids that many kids and their parents absolutely love. Pink Starlets (girls with pink wigs and aprons) whip up a fun updo, fancy nails, glittery makeup and glitter tattoos for each guest - and karaoke is enjoyed!  Some locations welcome boys with super hero parties!  All locations take a memory group photo for the Birthday girl to take home. With a Shear Madness Party, we take pride in working hard to help make your special occassion even more special.

Why Your Franchise Business Doesn't Make Money

Posted by Jim Otto on Mon, Jan 16, 2017 @ 12:01 PM

Notmakingmoney2.jpgAs the Director of Franchising here at Shear Madness Haircuts for Kids, one of the first questions I usually get asked is, “How much money can I make?” My response is always muted because the FTC doesn't allow us to answer that question. However, for those of you reading this who are new to franchising, you can find the answer to that question in the Disclosure Documents in Item 19 that you receive from a prospective franchise. Also, some franchises may choose to disclose those numbers but have the right not to, so that really depends on the franchise you are looking at. But at the end of the day, my typical response is to answer a question with a question, which is, “How hard are you willing to work?”

Most franchisors will tell you that the biggest variable in any franchise system is the owner operator. Take Shear Madness Haircuts for Kids as an example. The store was opened by Paula Thurman in 1997. Since then, Paula has run the concept in many different economic environments, all kinds of weather and all kinds of major events. Through it all, the store has made money! But the bottom line is it still took hard work and perseverance. From moving the location three times to, to staffing the store properly, to delivering the kind of customer service that all small businesses need to deliver. This brings me right back to the question I get asked in regards to how much money can be made at running a franchise. I'm not trying to over simplify this in any way or tell you that any one concept or system is perfect - including ours at Shear Madness. What I am trying to tell you is that regardless of the franchise you select, it's going to take a lot of hard work, a lot of perseverance, and maybe a little luck to succeed! So the answer to the question of “how much money can I make” always begins with the owner and operator of the business. Unfortunately, franchising is not a failsafe business model, and it will still rely on the concept, location, marketing and many other variables for the business to succeed and prosper. But the most important factor is the owner operator, and that could be why your franchise is not making money!

What do Parents think of Our Kids Salon Franchise?

Posted by Matthew S on Fri, Jan 13, 2017 @ 14:01 PM

10parents.jpg

Here at Shear Madness Haircuts for Kids, we're truly a place "Where Every Child Matters". From our awesome great kids haircuts, to cool parties, ear piercing, kids retail, jewelry and so much more, we're always having fun figuring out new ways to bring a smile to the parents and kids who visit one of our locations throughout the United States. In this past year alone, we've had thousands of kids walk through our doors into a magical world where they (and their parents) know they'll be treated like a star! This is why we thought it would be great to share the following reviews that parents have sent our way after visiting!

Just took 3 of my kiddos there today. My son got to play the xbox (he’s 10) while my girls got to watch a movie. I think they were nice, accommodating and the girls’ hair turned out super cute! - Michele

Alicia is awesome and so patient with my son who has special needs and getting a haircut is not an easy thing for him. I have no idea how she stays so calm and gets a great cut on his hair. I don't know what we would do without her. - Sonja

My son is almost 2 and this was his 3rd experience getting his haircut (we decided to try somewhere new this time). He isn't very cooperative, and in fact hates getting his haircut!! Your stylist was awesome with getting the job done!! I wish I asked for her name, but it was quite chaotic and I forgot to ask in the midst of everything. We will definitely be back, and I was super happy with the cut, how professional she was, and how she got the job done with patience!! Thank you! - Jenn

I just wanted to take the time to say thank you and tell you about the incredible experience we had at your salon! My 2.5 year old son is pretty resilient to haircuts and usually puts up quite a struggle.   Our hairdresser, Stephanie, was so patient with him and did everything to make him feel comfortable .  My son ended up sitting on my husband's lap while Stephanie cut his hair.  He loved watching cartoons and was so well-behaved as she gave him an amazing haircut! I cannot thank you enough for this great experience!  I have already told my friends and we will definitely be back! - Amy

I brought my son for his very first haircut today at your Amherst, NY location. The stylist did such a great job! She was quick and accurate! I will never take my children to another salon. Thanks for such a great experience! - Heather

I'd just like to say my sons hair looks amazing & you guys did an amazing job! Definitely recommending you guys to everybody I know. Thank you! - Meagin

I just wanted to let you know what a wonderful experience we had at Shear Madness this past Sunday.  My son is 18 months old and this was his 4th haircut.  His last few were not very good and to be honest we were always a bit unhappy with the cleanliness of the kids' salons we had visited. When I walked in, I was so happy to see a clean, welcoming salon where I was comfortable letting my son run around and explore.  Our stylist Laura was wonderful with my son and listened to exactly what I wanted.  In addition, the cutting area was clean and my son LOVED the car! We are so happy to have found a place for him to get his hair cut. Thank you SO much! -Stephanie

Love! Love! Love! This place!!! Took both girls here and they did an awesome job on their hair!!!!! This is the only place I will return to get their hair cut at!!! I had bad experiences at other hair cutting places for these children. - Diana

Brought my daughter and son this weekend to get their hair cuts. It’s an amazing place and great people! My son who usually freaks out about getting his hair cut was excited to pick out his car to sit in and let them cut his hair! Thank you for a great experience! We will be back!!! - Crystal

Awesome place! Took my 3yr old grandson to get his hair cut there, and he watched Spongebob on the little flatscreen by his airplane. He had a blast - it was so much fun just seeing him so excited!! - Lisa

5 tips to Encourage Healthy Lifestyles in Children

Posted by Matthew S on Tue, Nov 15, 2016 @ 15:11 PM

healthykids.jpgAt Shear Madness Haircuts for Kids, delivering a great experience for kids is our specialty. Whether it's helping them (and their parents) feel great by getting a fantastic haircut, hosting an awesome party, or providing the very best in hair products, hair related accessories, toys and more, we love being able to share a little happiness with the world through what we do best! Because to us, EVERY child matters!

Kids today have a lot of options available to them in regards to food choices, clothing, entertainment, toys, indoor and outdoor activities and much more. Sometimes it seems like it can be a tough job as a new parent trying to wade through all the noise and figure out what's best for your special little girl or guy. As Shear Madness Haircuts for Kids loves working with kids, and because we're parents too, we thought we'd share some of our thoughts on helping encourage healthy lifestyles in your children.

1. Eating Right is Important! Help your kids start the day out with a healthy breakfast for both mental and physical benefits. Each meal is important of course, but breakfast can sometimes be one of those overlooked meals where kids feel rushed in eating it (in order to get to wherever they need to go for the day). It's important to encourage children to slow down while eating, chewing each bite properly. Also, sometimes kids may eat something that isn't so healthy in order to be on their way more quickly too (like a piece of pizza from the previous night, a candy bar, or a can of pop - yikes!). Plus, breakfast can be a great time to talk with your kids and help them get in a good frame of mind for the day ahead.

2. Taking Care of Your Body: In addition to eating right, helping kids know how to properly care for themselves is a great skill that prepares them for a healthy lifestyle as an adult. For example, establishing a habit of brushing teeth in the morning and evening before bed, drinking plenty of water each day, getting plenty of sleep, keeping their environment clean and proper hand and face washing are all important considerations in helping kids build a good foundation of caring for their body.

3. Exercise, Exercise, Exercise! The benefits of good exercise can never be underestimated for people of all ages in our world today. Biking, walking and running are all good ways for kids to get out and exercise. Don't let the idea of exercise be a boring one either! For example, bike rides, running and walks can be to a different destination every day. You can also play little games as you exercise too, such as trying to spot certain birds as you're out, or counting certain colors of cars. And best of all, a lot of these can be done with your kids. Not only are you both getting exercise, but you're also getting in some great family time too!

4. Entertainment: With the prevelance of electronic toys, phones, portable games and a huge range of entertainment options through televesion, sometimes kids start thinking that the only way to be entertained is via staring at a screen. However, encourage your kids to get outside and have fun taking walks, building forts, playing with toys outside, making crafts, reading a book, playing a board game, writing a story, drawing a picture or helping mom or dad out with an important task around the house. Sure, it's fine to play with the electronic toys a little each day, but too much may keep kids (and you) from missing out on a lot of other fun experiences!

5. Taking Care of Your Appearance: This one is a fun one, as it's a way for kids to really look and feel great about themselves. Help them learn how to properly comb their hair or pick out an outfit to wear for the day. As they get older, they'll be able to do this on their own - although hopefully they'll still seek you out sometimes for those important questions! But in those younger years, it's a great way to spend a little one-on-one time with your child, and help them see you as a source of encouragement and trustworthy council on helping them feel good before they start their day. And don't forget - at Shear Madness Haircuts for Kids, we offer many great ways to help kids look and feel great about themselves too! We not only have cool haircuts and fantastic hair stylists that encourage and build kids up, but we have a carefully hand-picked selection of hairbows, jewelry, hair products, educational toys and much more designed to help kids feel great!

Franchise Warning! Are You Getting Sold or Recruited?

Posted by Jim Otto on Tue, Nov 15, 2016 @ 15:11 PM

warning.jpgCandidates often ask me why we pay for all their expenses when they come to Discovery Day to see our award winning children’s salons. Well, first of all that isn't quite accurate, as we do ask our best candidates to buy their own plane tickets (that way they have a little “skin in the game”). But other than that it’s pretty much on us. Now don’t get me wrong, there is some qualification that goes on and candidates that come into see us take our free no-obligation webinar, and have sent us some financial information that we check out. We don’t feel like it would be a prudent use of company funds for us to treat candidates to a  hotel on Kansas City’s Country Club Plaza district if they weren’t financially qualified to join our system. But for those that meet our qualifications, we do feel like Discovery Day is an important part of the process.

Franchising, more than any business I can think of, is a relationship driven model. The Franchisee relies heavily on the experience, knowledge, training and systems of the franchisor. In turn, as the franchisor, we are looking for people who will work hard, follow our proven systems and expand our brand. When that relationship works like it's suppose to, both sides benefit. Or putting it another way, it’s a “win-win” situation!

All this takes me back to whether you are being “sold” a franchise, or being recruited to join a brand. Franchisors that are out there only to sell franchises typically are looking to collect franchise fees and will sell a franchise to anyone who will buy. They are typically focusing on “quantity” instead of quality and turn a blind eye to marginal candidates. At Shear Madness our focus is on franchise “recruitment”. We want our candidates to match our profile, culture, and generally want them to be the type of people that have the same values as we do. We want our tag-line, Where Every Child Matters to really mean something to them. Understanding our culture is the starting point to a long happy marriage of franchise and franchisor, which is truly a ‘win-win” situation.
