3 Easy Tips to Encourage Creative Play in Kids!

Posted by Matthew S on Thu, Oct 13, 2016 @ 15:10 PM

Creativeplay.jpgIn case you haven't noticed, kids LOVE to play! But in today's world of easily accessible electronic games and kids content on television, it can sometimes be a little bit of a challenge to get kids to do more than passively interact with a phone, game console or TV screen. And while there's certainly nothing wrong with kids spending a little time watching a program or playing an electronic game, there's many ways that kids learn social skills and other valuable developmental building blocks (such as critical thinking, problem solving and verbal skills) through playing and interacting with the world around them. Following are three tips on encouraging positive development in children through your creative play!

1. Art, Drama and Music: Kids love being creative, and what better way to help facilitate this than by sharing this throughout their day. Give opportunities for your kids to create and make art by having supplies available for them to make things out of cardboard, construction paper - or even just drawing on a chalk-board or notepad. Also, plan to take a little time making a craft or drawing a picture with your children, which they're sure to love. Kids also love playing "pretend", which can be encouraged through a box of fanciful costumes and dress-up clothes, or a simple-to-make puppet stage with stuffed animals. Not only is this another great way for them to flex that creative muscle, but pretending with other children and adults can be a great way in helping kids with social skills! As for music, have a music night where you sit with your child and listen to a particular style of music. Some other creative play ideas might be to make available for your child some simple instruments (horns made out of tubes, or drums made out of empty containers) to play along with whatever music you're listening to.

2. Building and Books: Having a bookshelf of books just for kids is a great way to help them appreciate learning on their own. A family reading time, or visits to the library or book store (where they can pick out their own books) can also be a great way to encourage kids to enjoy learning on their own. Plus, many kids love finding books that help them learn how to make a kids crafts, draw a picture of a subject that interests them, or even build something amazing out of their favorite building toy! Plus, we've also seen kids enjoy using old hard-bound books (like older encyclopedias that you can find at garage sales) to build towers, roads and houses for their action figures or stuffed animals.

3. Positive Play when Out and About! Shopping trips don't have to be painful experiences for kids and parents alike. Use these occassions to invent fun kids games while shopping at the grocery store. For example, encourage kids to find products that all start with the letter "A", or see how many "green" items they can count. Also, kids might enjoy shopping trips a little more readily if they know that a fun stop at the local park might be included. And don't forget, many places of business love and cater to kids and their parents too - which can make running an errand not so much a chore - but a fun experience for all! For example, at Shear Madness Haircuts for Kids, we're more than just a hair salon - but a great place for kids to imagine and play too! Because at Shear Madness, every child matters! From our cool vehicle shaped chairs that allow children to engage in a little imaginative play through "driving" an awesome car or amazing airplane, to a great selection of cool toys and games that kids can take an up-close look at, we love being a unique place where kids and their parents can look and feel great about the time they've spent in our store! And don't forget - in addition to our fantastic haircuts and hair stylists that encourage and build kids up, we also have fun parties designed for play and positive social interaction, as well as a carefully hand-picked selection of hairbows, jewelry, hair products, educational toys and much more designed for helping kids feel great!

Helping Kids with Social Skills in the Digital Age!

Posted by Matthew S on Tue, May 26, 2015 @ 10:05 AM

Kids-Social-SkillsIn the digital age, kids might be very tech-savvy when it comes to playing the latest game or using social media, but then suffer from a little social awkwardness when it comes to talking to their peers. From kids (and adults too!) who stare at their phones during a meal, to children who would rather text than talk to someone who might even be in the same room, it sometimes might seem as if people are forgetting the importance of having positive real-life interactions with others. And while it's certainly very worthwhile that kids know how to use technnology for creative expression and the accomplishing of important tasks, it's also of great importance to make sure kids succeed in life through developing great social skills!

At Shear Madness Haircuts for Kids, we understand how important it is for kids to have fun and learn - but also be encouraged and motivated to succeed in life. Following are some tips that might be useful in modeling and helping kids with social skills!

Do as I say, not as I do? Parents can sometimes be overly critical of children, but then neglect to observe how their own behavior may be questionable as well! Kids who live in the same household as an adult will observe how adults behave and act, and will often times imitate this behavior - whether a parent likes it or not. If adults are spending a lot of time looking at social media (on the phone or computer), watching TV, and playing games, kids are going to want to do this too. If at all possible, it's best just wait to do these activities when the kids go to bed. And let's face it, who wants their kids to grow up and tell their own kids that their parents spent a lot of time on social media instead of being out making memories and having fun?

Spending Time Together: Kids learn how to communicate with other people through personal interactions. For example, meal time is a great occassion to teach children how to properly engage with others through observing body language and carrying on a conversation through listening, asking questions, making eye contact and more. Another great opportunity is reading a chapter from a favorite book each evening, and having a conversation about what the characters experienced, thought about, and the child's own thoughts and feelings about it. Of course, even playing a game or watching a television show together can be useful for interacting with kids as long as parents find moments to pause and talk about it during or afterwards.

Speak Up! In social situations where kids may be present with other adults, a parent can sometimes want to say too much for their kids. For example, at family gatherings when another adult asks a child a question about what they've been learning at school - parents can sometimes want to answer for them if the child looks uncertain about how to respond. However, if a child is shy or has trouble talking to adults, a parent can help train their child on how to talk in these situations by setting up imaginative scenarios where the parents pretends they are someone who asks a certain question - and then coaches the child on how they might best respond in the future. These pretend scenarios might include how to greet someone, shake hands, starting and ending a phone call, starting and ending a conversation, and more. Have fun!

Paws 4 Autism at Shear Madness!

Posted by Matthew S on Tue, Apr 14, 2015 @ 09:04 AM

paws4autism

On March 15, Paws 4 Autism arrived at the Shear Madness Haircuts for Kids located in Lee's Summit, Missouri. The event, which was designed to promote Autism Awareness, was unique in that it featured service dogs trained to help autistic children.

The dogs visited with families and were a big hit with kids and adults alike! Terri Wible, Executive Director and Cofounder of Paws 4 Autism, noted that there were even two standout moments that happened during the event. "The first was when we were trying to describe to the stylists and management just HOW the pups could help a child with autism during their cut. It was easier to SHOW the calming effects…so we put Merlin (one of our pups in training) up in the car while my daughter was getting her hair trimmed.  Everyone was amazed at how calm he was sitting so high! The second was a lovely lady who stopped in as she was passing by just to find out about our dogs and the work Paws 4 Autism does.  While she doesn’t have a direct connection to autism, she did know several who may be able to assist in fundraising or opening doors to possible sponsors.  We are truly grateful for any assistance we can get!"

Janon Otto, CEO of Shear Madness Franchising also attended the event, and noted how impressed she was with the dogs. "I talked to the families that attended and found that one child had meltdowns that lasted 2.5 hours - but since they received one of these service dogs, their son calms down in 5 minutes!  They are also now able to take this dog with them to Wal-mart and have a leisurely shopping experience, instead of rushing to avoid a meltdown by their son." Janon also noted that, "These dogs were so calm - when they wear their vests they know that they are working and they are calm.  When they don't have vests on - they behave like any other dogs!"

Starting back in July of 2010, Paws 4 Austism's Mission has been to bring Autism Service Dogs and related services, including community outreach and education, service dog awareness, informational training and social skills classes, to children who demonstrate autism spectrum behaviors. Their vision is for all children on the autism spectrum and for those with spectrum behaviors to have access to specifically trained autism service and/or therapy dogs to assist with their peer interaction and improve social integration in their schools and communities. Ms. Wible also notes that, "Paws 4 Autism is 100% volunteer driven and funded by the community. Our growth is dependent upon the generosity of our Donors, Sponsors, In-Kind Partners and especially our Volunteers. If anyone is interested in finding out creative ways they can assist, including fostering puppies in training, please contact us at Paws 4 Autism!"

Kids today have a lot of options when it comes to entertainment. And with televisions and video game stations in our hair salons to help provide positive distractions for kids while their hair is being cut, we know a thing or two about great games and television shows. And best of all, we understand how important it is for kids to have fun - but also be able to find positive and educational content to help encourage and motivate.

Below is a list of some great apps and fun television shows we've come across.

Educational Apps for Kids

In this fun game, which has a unique style that is sure to be a hit with kids and parents alike, you'll use your fingers to comb, color, shave and blow-dry lifelike hair on a number of cute characters.

Endless Alphabet: (Available on iOS, Google Play, Amazon App Store and Windows Phone). Endless Alphabet is a great interactive app that helps facilitate reading success! Words that are taught through the app also feature interactive puzzles and talking letters with animations that help illustrate the definition.

Daniel Tiger's Grr-ific Feelings: (Available on iOS, Google Play, Amazon, Nook and Windows Store). Daniel Tiger from the well known PBS Kids series helps kids learn about their feelings through fun games and songs. Children are sure to enjoy the photo booth, drawing easel, 18 sing-along songs, and the Trolley game (where over a dozen mini games can be found)!

Duolingo: (Available on iOS, Android, Windows Store). This app is a great way to learn different languages for both kids and adults! By earning points for correct answers to fun games, you'll enjoy seeing your progress as you level up and learn! And it's FREE!

TeachMe: (Available on iOS). This series of educational apps help kids learn through age-appropriate learning categories. With fun graphics and reward-based activities, TeachMe has received a lot of praise from teachers and parents.

Cookie Doodle: (Available on iOS and Windows Store). Does your child enjoy making cookies? If so, they'll really have a great time with this app! By using their finger to roll the dough, they'll also cut out shapes, and sprinkle frosting and other fun toppings - and then get to "eat" it! Best of all, there's no mess!

Great Television for Kids

How It's Made: This half hour documentary television show gives an exciting look into how everyday items (engines, musical instruments, sporting equipment) are made. This is a fun show to sit down to as a family, and is sure to help kids think more about the world around them. It also helps teach about design, manufacturing, and more!

The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh: A beloved classic, this movie is broken into four animated stories - which is ideal in case your children would like to take a break. With fun songs, beautiful animation, and masterful storytelling, you're sure to find something special with these magical Winnie the Pooh Adventures.

Mighty Machines: If your kids love machines, then they are sure to have a great time learning about airplanes, diggers, trains, fire engines and more through this fun television program. The show is unique as it uses voice actors to make the machines talk to the viewers in order to describe how they work and what's going on.

The Big Adventure Series: With more than 16 videos, the Big Adventure Series allows kids to go behind the scenes to learn about submarines, space shuttles, national parks and more. Enjoyable and educational for kids, this series is also a lot of fun for adults too!

Lice Prevention: Putting a Stop to Head Lice!

Posted by Matthew S on Mon, Jan 12, 2015 @ 14:01 PM

licepreventionYikes! Just hearing the word lice can make your skin crawl. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), around 6-12 million people are treated for head lice in the United States each year! Why are so many families having to RID themselves of those tiny insects? The answer is all around us: gymnastics mats, football helmets, the cute scarf you tried on at the store, and maybe even those headphones you shared on the airplane. But perhaps the most common transmission of these bugs is through head-to-head touching, which is why it is no surprise that most cases are in children between the ages of 4 and 14 (as children enjoy being in close proximity with one another).

Luckily, because our salons have a lot of experience working with children and hair, we have a pretty good idea of how lice can be prevented from entering your home. Tabby Bibbs, manager at the Lee's Summit Shear Madness Haircuts for Kids notes that, "Head lice can happen to anyone at anytime, no matter the socioeconomic status. It is more prevalent 3 times a year - the beginning of the school year, winter coat time, and when pools open for the season. It's a never ending cycle."

Head lice are small - about the size of a sesame seed. They are wingless, and as such can't fly or even hop. But with feet that are especially designed for hanging onto hair follicles, these annoying little parasites can live up to a month on the head. However, they will die within 2 days of falling off - which is why sealing infested items in plastic containers or bags for around 2 weeks will make sure there are no surviving lice. Lice will also lay tear-drop shaped eggs (nits) that are attached to hair follicles near the scalp.

So what should you do if you find lice in your home? The first and most important thing is not to panic! As stated by the CDC, "head lice can be a nuisance but they have not been shown to spread disease. Personal hygiene or cleanliness in the home or school has nothing to do with getting head lice." As for treatment, it's totally up to the parents. We suggest getting it professionally done, because you have follow up visits. And as always, remember not to share hairbrushes, caps, beanies or any other head covering with others. If your child is in school or daycare put their coat, hat and gloves in their book bag. Also, be sure to ask their teacher if there have been any cases of lice every few weeks. Keep boys hair cut shorter, and girls hair in a high ponytail or braid.

Furthermore, if you'd like a little extra insurance in keeping the creepy-crawlies away, be sure to pick up either Circle of Friends Lice Defense products or our Organic Original Sprout products at our stores. They are both very effective without being full of harsh chemicals. Lice Defense from Circle of friends includes a hairspray, leave in conditioner, and hair gel. Organic Original Sprout carry several products as well. Bibbs says that, "The Miracle Detangler and Leave in Conditioner from Original Sprout helps to repel and prevent head lice - and they smell absolutely wonderful!" Read more about Lice treatment and Hair care products here
