OpenNYShear Madness Haircuts for Kids Signs Area Development Agreement for Multiple Locations

Based in Overland Park, Kansas, Shear Madness Franchising announced the signing of an Area Development Agreement to open multiple locations in New York State, Pittsburg, PA and Cleveland Ohio. The agreement allows for multiple locations to be developed over a number of years. Danni Development, LLC of Williamsville, NY reached the agreement with Shear Madness Franchising in late April. “We are excited to bring Shear Madness Haircuts for Kids to the East coast,” said Todd Danni, Managing Partner. “We feel like Shear Madness has a unique business model and we look forward to expanding the concept in the northeast.”

“We are excited about partnering with Danni Development, LLC and look forward to our relationship going forward,” commented Janon Otto, CEO and Director of Operations for Shear Madness Franchising. “As Todd brings a wealth of experience and a solid business background in developing businesses, the agreement has great synergies for both sides. With franchise locations mostly located in the midwestern part of the United States, Shear Madness believes it’s the right time to enter new markets. Furthermore, as part of our overall strategy, we wanted to establish ourselves in the Midwest and make sure that we could support and grow our Midwest based franchise partners before expanding nationally,” commented Otto.

Paula Thurman, a partner in the franchising company who oversees training and quality control of new franchise locations, originally founded Shear Madness Haircuts for Kids in Kansas City in 1997. Thurman notes that, “This agreement allows us to expand the Shear Madness Haircuts for Kids footprint into 8 states and gives us continued momentum going forward.” Shear Madness Haircuts for Kids currently has locations open in Kansas, Missouri, Texas, Iowa and New Mexico.

Marketing a Children's Hair Salon!

Posted by Matthew S on Tue, May 5, 2015 @ 12:05 PM

MarketingIn the exciting world of Children's Hair Salons, building brand awareness can be an exciting challenge and another way to run a smarter business. Not only is it important to use clever eye-catching marketing techniques in the community (such as what we discussed in our article Gorilla Marketing Strategies and Erin Nanke's Marketing in Des Moines), but it's also important to engage your customers through having an online presence by developing - and maintaining - a website and social media content.

For example, the Shear Madness Haircuts for Kids website ranks near the top for childrens salons, the salon business and kids spa locations. We consistently receive between 35,000 to 60,000 visitors per month. Our Facebook site currently has over 30,000 "Likes", and has been a great way to interact with our customers through fun contests, receiving positive feedback, and listening / responding to customer concerns. Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest and Google+ have also been great ways to reach out to our customers by providing fun content for them to access each day. We do this through the careful understanding that although simply having an online presence has certainly been important for our business, utilizing the internet to reinforce the FUN that Shear Madness represents has been a vital ingredient for success!

Great design also configures into this equation too - especially given the short-attention span that people have in the age of the internet. While it's true you can't always judge a book by it's cover, people will quickly pass a business by if the business looks unprofessional, uninteresting, or just plain boring - especially in the children's market! Without nicely designed ads, signs, posters, web banners, meme graphics and more that clearly communicate your brand, customers will unfortunately find their interest drawn by other businesses who do. So be sure to take time to invest in great graphic design that communicates what you do, applies a consistent message (so your audience will visually recognize who you are), and provides a way for your customers to feel the FUN when they see your materials!

So while marketing and design can be a lot of fun, and generate a lot of excitement for your brand, it sometimes doesn't come cheap. Nor is it something that takes only a couple hours here and there in order to be successful. However, here at Shear Madness Haircuts for Kids, we understand how important it is! Because of this, we work hard in providing many great resources and materials to help our franchise owners succeed in the marketing and development of their business. For example, we have numerous photographs and art assets easily available to our franchisees through dropbox for the creation of flyers, e-mails and more. We also provide graphic design and marketing services for franchisees who may need a little more in-depth assistance with newspaper ads, signs, or marketing through social media avenues. Whatever the case may be, you can bet that by being partnered with our great team - you'll not only have a friend in the business, but a true advantage as well!

Increase Employee Job Satisfaction (and performance too!)

Posted by Matthew S on Mon, Apr 27, 2015 @ 10:04 AM

CreativeIn the world of business, it can sometimes be an innocent oversight for a manager or business owner to become so focused on finding ways to connect and meet the needs of their customers, that they forget to find ways to connect and meet the needs of their team.

Having creative ways to keep in touch with your staff not only helps make everyone feel needed and satisfied in their work (which in turn helps promote better job performance), but it also helps stimulate efficient and effective communication amongst your employees!  When employees feel needed and communication is great, job satisfaction, performance and employee loyalty (retaining employees) also improve!

Here's some helpful tips on finding ways to communicate creatively with your staff.

Frequent Meetings (but not too frequent!): Having a short meeting once a week can be a great way for a manager or business owner to connect with their staff. Be sure the meeting is relatively short in order to maintain good attention. Topics to cover in a weekly meeting may include goals for the week, recognition of goals met from a prior week, and inspiring tips or short videos to help motivate employees. Bringing in a healthy snack once a month may also help motivate and increase loyalty. Use these meetings to motivate the whole team - but be wary of singling anyone out in front of their peers as it may foster resentment and / or jealousy.

Utilize a Bulletin Board: A Bulletin Board may be a nice way for employees to post fun photos or area events that they may think their co-workers would enjoy. It can also be a good place for management to share upcoming events on a calendar, as well as important reminders. Other ideas might include postivie customer feedback, industry news, upcoming birthdays, work anniversaries, etc.

Create a Newsletter: Creating a monthly newsletter either through e-mail or website can be a great way to share fun tips and upcoming events that employees may want to know about. It's important to have some fun here as well, or else staff may not pay attention to it. Ideas include a "classifieds" section, an employee profile (with their favorite movies, books, etc), funny events that have happened in the office, recipes, birthdays, work anniversaries, photos of employees having fun, etc.

Be Approachable: Be mindful of how you interact and respond to employees. The tone of your voice and the posture or body language you use in interactions may communicate that of being unapproachable. Sometimes all it can take is one unpleasant encounter for an employee to not want to bring questions or concerns to a manager. Also, find ways to engage with your staff through taking the time to get to know them, and appreciate them through finding ways to thank them periodically for their work (a hand-written note, a verbal thank-you, or taking the team out for lunch for a special occassion).

Here at Shear Madness Haircuts for Kids Franchising (a salon franchise for kids), we work hard to share our many great resources for small businesses, marketing strategies and business experiences so that our franchisees will have the tools to succeed! Is a Kids Hair Salon Franchise a Good Investment?

Posted by Matthew S on Wed, Mar 25, 2015 @ 12:03 PM

goodinvestmentIs there really room in the lucrative hair care franchise market for a Kids Hair Salon Franchise? And for that matter, is the hair care franchise industry a good place to invest your franchise dollars? Because let's be honest. There's already a number of low cost family hair salons out there - perhaps some that currently operate within your own community. But what about children? Can this potential for profit within this hair care segment really be there? For the individual investigating franchise opportunities, these are valid questions that are good to consider.

The Unique Opportunities of a Kid's Hair Salon: Following are some reasons why the Kids Salon Franchise continues to be one of the more unique opportunities you might want to explore in the months ahead!

  • While the hair care industry is recession resistant, some of the areas that have been hit the hardest in the recent economic downturn are the high end salon services. Since the childrens salon model doesn't really cater to this segment, they haven't been as affected.

  • Because parents want the very best for their kids, they'll often seek out professionals who not only understand and know how to work with children when it comes to hair care - but also understand the importance in helping children feel great about themselves! And you've probably heard it said before, but it's true! As the Kid's Hair Salon niche is underserved, there's a lot of untapped potential for this salon specialty within many communities.

  • When talking about salons, there are usually several different types that come to mind. For example, there's the High End Salons (where the client follows the stylist and stylists work on a commission basis), Low End Salons (walk-in salons where clients aren't really loyal to a stylist or to the salon - it's all about convenience), and Booth Rentals (a salon where the stylists rent the space and makes their own appointments, etc.). a kids salon must be designed speciallfy for children (stylists tend to be employees, however they develop relationships with the kids they serve). Because a kids salon doesn't fit any of these typical models, clients will come for the atmosphere - as well as the great stylists! And don't forget, clients will also drive further to treat their children to the more friendly atmosphere!

  • The market serving parents and their kids is the largest dollar consumer base in the nation! This lends itself well to offering other products and services pertaining to children within the salon itself. And when you combine this with a powerful network of moms and dads who blog and talk to their friends about businesses who market to this segment - your cost of advertising may be drastically reduced!

Challenges within the Kids Salon Industry: While we certainly believe that there are a lot of positives to doing business in the Children's Hair Care Industry, there's also some important issues to consider as well.

  • It's important to be aware that although Kid's Hair Salons are resession resistant - they aren't resession proof. Owners must work at assuring their customers that they are getting a great value for their precious dollars spent. Additionally, services must be priced reasonably enough to retain clients.

  • Care must be given when choosing a market for this concept, as it only caters to a certain age group. If there are too many kids salons in one area, they will not be able to succeed. Also, as the age group of a Kid's Hair Salon is limited, the appeal of the best concept should be wide by making sure that it attracts both boys and girls to as wide of an age group as possible.

  • Operating a business within the parents network is a great place to be, but if you aren't providing a great service, then this network can back fire on you as well! The atmosphere of a Kid's Hair Salon must of course be fun and energetic, but it also must be clean, orderly, and up-to-date. This clientel demands it!

  • When choosing what products or services to offer a customer, careful consideration needs to be given as to the costs vs. benefits of those offerings. A franchise system that chooses products and services on a research level is the best kind of system.

One thing to remember is that when an individual buys into a franchising opportunity with Shear Madness Haircuts for Kids, they won’t be going at it alone. Our team excels at being a partner who wants our franchise owners to succeed! We also not only have a lot of business experience under our belt - we LOVE what we do as well! Salon Franchise - Which type is right for you?

Posted by Janon Otto on Mon, Feb 23, 2015 @ 14:02 PM

Child getting haircut
In the franchise world there are many options, and choosing between categories alone can be a challenge.  However, one category that is worth evaluating is the salon franchise industry.  Why?  Well, everyone needs a haircut now and then.  Not to mention that most sectors of the salon industry are recession resistant, and it doesn't appear that the internet is going to be able to replace haircuts anytime soon!

Salon Franchise Options

The choices for a Salon Franchise might be a little bigger than you think - but don't worry! It's not too difficult to sort out.

1.  Original Salons: The ones everyone thinks of are some of the original hair salon franchises - think Great Clips, Fantastic Sams, Snip n' Clip, etc.  These are low-end, walk-in type salons.  Clientele doesn't make an appointment, and they tend to exist on every major street corner in most metropolitan cities.  These typically have the stylists acting as management as well and the owner is an absentee owner.

2.  Mens salons: This niche is relatively new to the franchise sector.  Probably the most well know mens salon franchise system is Sport Clips.  However, many others have opened in recent years.  Everything from very high-end Men's Country Club type salons that offer a full array of services i.e. The Boardroom - down to lower-end salons that do high volume, yet still offer men a good haircut without all the frills.  There are also those that appeal to pool players, and those that just cater to "players".  Most wives don't really appreciate the "player" salon environment, and taking your kids to one might be considered as "inappropriate"!

3.  Kids salons: Again we have a type of salon that is relatively new to the scene.  There is no real dominant player in this arena.  Shear Madness Haircuts for Kids has been in operation since 1997 and that's one of the earlier children's salons!  None of the salon systems predate the 90's.  Each franchise has its own personality and philosophy on running a succesful salon.  Extras added to some are kids retail and birthday parties.  Some are run by a manager and others have the stylist/manager configuration. A close evaluation of what makes up the revenue portion of the salon is important to look at. For example, How easy is that portion to run?  Does it take an onsite owner or can it be run absentee?

4.  Hair Removal Salons: These are also very new to the franchise arena.  Tropical Laser Hair Removal opened in 2007! They still fit under salons as the technicians need to have licenses just as hair stylists need to have licenses.  These can be combined with the above types of salons or can be a stand alone type. Many times these are partnered with businesses offering massages.

5.  Nail Salons: There really isn't a dominant player here at all.  It seems that most nail salons are individually owned, yet we're waiting for a franchise to pull it all together!

6.  Massage Salons: An example of a Massage Salon would be Massage Envy.  These typically sell memberships instead of collecting revenue when the service is actually performed.  This type of franchise with membership fees is very popular, especially in the health club arena.  Many buy memberships and then don't use them like they should - which of course helps the franchise system be more profitable.

There you have it!  As you can see, there's a lot to choose from. If you are thinking you might like to know more about franchising in general, we'd invite you to download our FREE toolkit. This great e-document is a fantastic resource in helping you learn more information about investing in a franchise.

The Easy Way to write a Small Business Plan for a Bank Loan

Posted by Janon Otto on Fri, Feb 20, 2015 @ 10:02 AM

Writing a business plan for a small business can be a daunting task - just the sound of it makes it sound BIG! So here are some down-to-earth tips to make the process easy!

small business business plan

It's important to understand that when developing a plan, there are plans for internal use, those for investors, those for bankers, etc. Be sure you know who your plan is going to be for. In this article we are going to focus on the one written to obtain financing.

If you are applying for a loan for a small franchise business, this process will be a bit easier as much of the information for three of your four sections the franchisor can help you with.  The bank will also know that you are applying for financing for a business that others have been successful in, and that you'll receive guidance and training for your business.  However, they will still want to know about you and why you personally would be a good fit for this business.

But remember, do NOT go for Length! Even though a plan that is pages and pages long may look impressive on the outside, to a banker with limited time it is NOT impressive!  They want to know "just the facts".  So keep your plan to around 10 pages.

They will evaluate you based on several criteria and those are what they want to know about.  As financing has become more and more difficult to obtain, selling yourself and your plan is required.

Section 1: This section is all about discussing the business that you want to start or get financing for. You may find it helpful to do a small SWAT analysis on your business (S-strengths, W-weaknesses, O-opportunities, T-threats of your business idea) - this will help you complete this section. You'll also want to be sure to properly answer the following questions:
  • What is the purpose of this business?
  • What problem does it solve?
  • What industry will it belong to and how much business does that industry capture?
  • Why are you different from what is out there?
  • What is your competition?
  • What research have you done that makes you believe that your business will succeed? (demographics, etc.)

Section 2: This section is all about you or your staff. In it, you'll discuss who the key people are that will be involved in your business. Be sure to sell yourself first (if you are going to be the main employee), then list the others involved and their relevant information.
  • Who are you and your people?
  • What relevant experience and education do they have that would make them competant and able to help you run this business?
  • What is their job responsibility in your business?

Section 3: Here is where you ask for the amount of money that you would like to receive. Make sure and ask for what you will need - including working capital.
  • What are your plans for the money?
  • Detail out what it will be spent for and how you determined what those amounts are.

Section 4: In this section describe how you intend to pay off the loan you are asking for.
  • Estimate your revenues and be sure to let them know how you came up with your figures.  With a Kids Salon Franchise you would estimate the number of haircuts per month, the price of those and the revenue from other services (with reasonable expecations to start slower and grow over time).
  • Estimate your expenses as best as you can.  Here you should also let them know where you got your figures.  Make sure and group expenditures into easily understandible categories.  For example, talk about your Fixed and Variable Expenses. Fixed are those costs that will not change no matter how much business you do (rent, some salaries, equipment payments, phone, etc.). Variable expenses will change as your business changes (inventory costs, labor, possibly utilities).

If you have pictures or other items that would make this presentation more interesting, by all means add them - but do NOT overdo it!  Only add photos if they help educate the banker on what they will be loaning money for.  Do not just add pictures for fluff.

If you are beginning a small business franchise, then the franchisor can help you with items 2, 3 & 4. The information in the franchisors item 7 will assist you with section 3.  The information in the franchisors FDD item 19 can assist greatly with section 4.  If you are starting a business from scratch, a great resource to walk you through the business plan process is SCORE.

Maybe a franchise could help you in jump starting a new small business!  Download our free whitepaper to learn the four considerations when buying a franchise.

10 Reasons to Invest in a Hair Salon Franchise

Posted by Matthew S on Fri, Jan 16, 2015 @ 12:01 PM

Shear Madness Haircuts for Kids,Kids in a Kids Salon,Kids Boutique

Many people who are interested in opening their own business and becoming their own boss often wonder what the advantages might be of investing in a franchise opportunity. Following are ten reasons why buying a franchise may translate into the long-term success of your investment.

Robust Industry: Many franchise systems offer services that are in high demand. The children’s segment of the recession resistant Hair Salon Industry is one such example, It's currently worth around $19 billion. To date, there are around 45 million kids in the Shear Madness age group – and this is expected to grow by about 7 million by the year 2020!

Marketing Support: Ask anyone who runs a business, and they’ll tell you that marketing not only takes a lot of time – but can cost a lot of money too. However, an effective marketing plan is critical in letting the community know about what your business does, where it’s located, and so much more. For example, Shear Madness Haircuts for Kids understands this, and offers great resources and strategies to help businesses attract new customers.

A Record of Success: Franchisors will have a proven record of success. Through years of experience marketing to their customers, they usually understand what works - and what doesn't. Through becoming a franchisee, you automatically gain this valuable business advantage.

The Brand: A franchise brand is a powerful tool. As an example, the Shear Madness Brand is one that is instantly recognizable as being fun. Those who own a franchise with Shear Madness are automatically connected to the tens of thousands of parents and children who love who we are and what we do. This translates into many repeat customers who share with friends and family about their great Shear Madness experience!

Buying Power:  Franchisors usually have experience in knowing what products sell well and what don’t. Additionally, they have the knowledge on how to negotiate for the best prices on everything needed for the successful operation of the business. Many times the sheer number of franchise locations allows the franchise to negotiate for better pricing.

Store Location: Where to locate is an important question any business owner should consider. Franchisors help study your community in order to help you find the best possible location for success.  They know the numbers and other criteria that allow for the possibility of a successful franchised business.

Networking: Franchising can be a little like a group of trusted friends, and should be a great environment of sharing and building each other up. Franchise owners who work with other franchisees and communicate what works and what doesn’t will have a competitive advantage over those who don’t!

Training Support: Great franchise systems have worked hard to develop many training resources to help you achieve success. For example, with Shear Madness Haircuts for Kids, we provide our franchisees with in-store training with stylists, and encourage opportunities to network with other franchise owners. Because of this, you’ll have access to a wealth of business knowledge at your fingertips.

Building your Store: One of the benefits in buying a franchise is the franchisor's expertise  in designing the layout of a prospective business, working with the right contractors, and knowing how much furniture and equipment will be needed. Career Change Advice: Buy a Business or Franchise?

Posted by Matthew S on Tue, Jan 13, 2015 @ 13:01 PM

careerchangeBuying any business or franchise can be an exciting and rewarding adventure, but success won’t come overnight! You’ll likely spend a great deal of time, energy and financial resources in order to help ensure the success of your business. And in a way, because you’re making such an important investment, you’ll find yourself putting a little bit of “you” into your business too. Therefore, it’s good to take a step back before starting the whole process and ask yourself the following: Does the franchise you are considering really fit with who you are as a person?

Following are several tips to keep in mind when investigating a franchise.

Personality – Does the franchise you are considering fit with your personality? Do you consider yourself an introvert or an extrovert? Do you enjoy leading, or would you rather be behind the scenes? Are you outgoing, funny, regimented, or reserved? Because there are so many different kinds of franchises that provide a large variety of services, you’ll want to look at areas that suit your personality.  For example, many people who choose Shear Madness Haircuts for Kids are generally a more outgoing personality type who enjoys the fun atmosphere our stores have. They also enjoy working with kids, and like the thought of being able to provide a service that seeks to bring a little more happiness into the world!

Lifestyle – Many people consider investing into a franchise system because of the unique challenges and opportunities that running your own business represents. But it’s important to remember that the kind of lifestyle you have (or appreciate) is an important factor in considering a franchise opportunity. Forcing yourself into a system that isn’t really “you”, can quickly lead to feeling burned out and unhappy.  For example, if you enjoy getting up early and going to bed early, certain types of franchise systems that are open late hours (or 24 hours) may not be ideal for you. Or maybe you don’t really like the thought of having to wear a suit everyday, or prefer more low-key environments over fast-paced high energy work spaces. All of these are important lifestyle preferences to take into consideration.

Skills – Think of looking for the right franchise as looking for the right job. If you have 10 years of experience working as a chef, it probably wouldn’t be a good idea to look for a job as an architect. You simply wouldn’t have the right skills to effectively do the job. Or, if you’re someone who really doesn’t have a lot of experience in managing people, a job that requires management of entry-level staff may not be a good fit. Similarly, when making a decision on a franchise, don’t be afraid to perform an honest look at what your skills are. You can do this through looking at your resume and seeing what you’ve demonstrated an excellence for over the course of your work history. Or you may additionally want to consider what you may enjoy doing in your free time as well. Either way, in order to help ensure success as a future franchise owner, be sure to focus on what your talents and abilities are!

Tools for Assessment - If you would like a little help in figuring out who you are and what really motivates you to get through each day, you might want to the following online resources.
